What it usually means
On a call, nobody sees you thinking. Silence, a camera off, a late answer — each gets filled in with an explanation, and the explanation people reach for is about you.
It is rarely about how interested you are. It is about what the call can and cannot show.
What else it can mean
- The hour. The call is at the edge of your day, and it shows.
- The format. Nobody can see you listening, so they assume you are not.
- The floor. The call moves faster than you can get in, and you stopped trying.
What to find out first
Which call, and what "engaged" would have looked like to them. If the answer is "say something", ask when there was room to.
What the research says, and where it stops
In dispersed teams, people had trouble interpreting silence and filled the gaps by blaming the person rather than the situation.
